Take Time out or You Will Take Time out

A few weeks ago I had a pain that did not go away. After a trip to hospital, my GP and a Surgeon it was decided that I needed an operation to repair a hernia. I guess there is never a good time to get a hernia and now was not the best of times. There was a lot happening in my jobs and the projects that I am working on. However I guess if one does not take time out to relax, then eventually you will have to. This has been one of those moments for me.

On the positives I have been fortunate to be operated on very quickly. I had the operation on Tuesday. Also I had a few days to plan forward how I will juggle work and projects. It is amazing that when you are forced to take time off that you find a way to prioritise and get done the important things. So in preparation, I delegated a bunch of tasks and roles. Put on hold others and accepted that other tasks will not be completed.

I must admit that the thought of having an operation made me nervous. I have no logical reason to be nervous, however I was…. This made me a little emotional. That said I had a good surgeon operating on me, Dr Ailene Fitzgerald and the hospital was very good, Calvary John James Hospital. The medical and auxiliary staff, patient service and nursing was fantastic.

The most amazing thing from the operation was experiencing my wife’s love for me. It was awesome to know that I was not alone. For a control freak like me (I like to be in control all the time), I was able to let go and relax for the operation, knowing that Kim had things sorted (it did help with the relaxation when I was given the anaesthetics). When I finally came to after the operation in the recovery room the only thing I wanted was to see my Kimy.

I spent that evening in Hospital, in the Maternity Ward of all places…. I got some deep sleep, though in limited time packets. By morning, I was good to go…. Yes, I was still in pain and on pain killers. In the hospital I had my set up my computer and phone for entertainment, listening to Podcasts, watching TV and was having my food delivered. This all combined with time with my loving wife. What more could I ask for?

As I rest this week after the operation, I have watched day time TV (over it already), relaxed, slept and pondered. My thoughts have been towards:

  • How can I ensure that allow time to relax in my life?
  • What do I do to relax?
